If you've seen the movie Finding Nemo, you might remember that line....
"Just keeping swimming, just keep swimming......"
I feel like I've been saying that a lot to myself the past few weeks.
Overwhelmed. Frustrated. Tired.
These are just some of the feelings that I have been experiencing lately. I feel like my plate overflowth with "stuff" right now.....so much of it out of my control which only adds to my frustration.
We have been working through having Dylan's evaluated by the school district to see if he would qualify for therapy services with them. He is currently receiving his OT through private therapy. We have several concern and are trying to stay on top of things since we know that early intervention is really the key. On Monday, we had the meeting with the Special Education teacher, OT and PT from the school district to see if he qualified. To make a very long story a little shorter, he didn't. Well, he COULD have qualified but the areas that "qualified" him were determined to not be impacting his education. While some parents would feel relieved, that's not the feeling I have. So many things that they said during the meeting I just plain didn't agree with and at times, I wasn't even convinced we were talking about the same child. It's a situation where I feel very stuck. I hear his current OT and doctors who have known him since birth stressing how important it is that we do these evaluations because he really needs support in the classroom.....and yes, the "team" saw those reports but then I hear them say that he doesn't qualify at this point because he's in 4K. If we had sent him to kindergarten, then he would be qualifying at this point......I thought we had made a good decision to not send him but who knows. So, for now, we will continue to get him to OT 3-4 times a month and hope that in the next 9 months, we can make some good progress. I, however, have no doubt that a year from now we will be sitting in yet another meeting to talk about his evaluations with the school district. (funny, how the team who did his evals felt the same way.....hmmmm.)
Just keep swimming, just keep swimming!
Then there's Eva the Diva! The good news is that she got her Sure Step ankle braces and is doing great with them! She doesn't seem to mind wearing them and we're already seeing improvements!
She had her 6 month follow up with her allergist this week. She's been having a lot of tummy pains that we haven't really been able to get to the bottom of. She had an abdominal ultrasound a few weeks ago that was, thankfully, normal. Her allergist is running several blood tests to see if we can get to bottom of anything with that. He is re-testing for wheat.....her last bloodwork showed a slight, slight allergy but it wasn't even a high enough number that they really count it. He is also checking for Celiac Disease (oy!). We've had questions about sesame for sometime so since that's never been tested, he's also checking that. Along with those he's' re-checking all her known allergies to see if any of her numbers are going down! Fingers crossed on this one! Since she had such a severe reaction to her bee sting this summer he decided that it was worth checking on the top 5 "sting reactions" too....no clue what the 5 were. We're hoping to have all the results before Thanksgiving.
Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.....
And now for Miss Kira. I wish that I could say this school was going along great and we had no concerns but that's not the case. We are really happy with her teaching team, therapists, and aides. They are wonderful and truly want this year to be a success for Kira. We have very open lines of communication going both ways which is a great improvement from last year. These are good things since she is looping and should have the same teams next year.
Kira has really been struggling with fatigue and has been crying a lot in school. After several conversations with everyone on her team, we have decided that it's worth trying to shorten 2 of Kira's school days. This year, unlike the last 2 years, all the specials are in the morning and academics are in the afternoon.....so we will be taking Kira to school at 12:10 on Tuesday and Thursday starting next week. This will definitely take some juggling on our part since the morning can't be spent running around....it needs to be calm and restful for Kira while keeping Eva busy and on schedule with her therapy. Her teachers will be keeping track to see if shorten a couple of days helps her time in the classroom be more productive. If we find that it helps, we will continue. If it doesn't make a difference, then we'll go from there.
All of these "things" feel really overwhelming right now....mostly because so many of these things take more time and I feel really short on that as it is. We'll make it through this stuff and of course, as the kids were singing on the way to bed........
